Whether you’re out and about or in the comfort of your own home, being prepared for the worst-case scenario is crucial. Carrying a weapon or having a quick plan in case of a home invasion might seem like all you need, but there are more factors to consider. Concealed carrying as often as possible, planning with your family for bad situations, and always staying alert are all tips you can utilize to keep yourself, your family, and others around you safe.
Since we can’t always predict when and where a situation may arise, always carry your gun to places it’s legal to do so. Shootings or robberies can happen anywhere, anytime, so it’s better to be prepared.
You may have already talked with your family about what you would do in the event of a home invasion. Even so, it’s important to discuss many different scenarios that could happen and what you should or should not do. Your guns should be stored safely from children, but also in a place where you can easily access them in case of an emergency. Gun safes with a thumb print opening are great because you won’t be wasting time trying to remember an access code. What would you do if you woke up and came face to face with an armed burglar? What if you’re getting out of your car in the driveway and a masked gunman tries to take your car? Planning for all different situations will get you thinking critically about your plan of action. Make sure to include practicing drawing your gun or time yourself on how fast you can reach the gun safe and open it.
Make your home a difficult target for criminals by installing strong outside lighting and surveillance cameras. An alarm system or a dog can also be a great deterrent. Always keep your doors locked and keep up with your gun training and weapon maintenance.
It’s easy to think you’ll be the hero and protect your family, but what would happen if you ended up having to shoot a home invader? Your adrenaline will be pumping, and you may not be thinking clearly. Call the police and when they arrive be sure the gun is put away sa fely. They will be trying to get to the bottom of what happened, and you don’t want to be confused for the perpetrator. You’ll also not want to say too much at first and leave long explanations for when you’re being interviewed at the police station with your lawyer present.
Awareness is key. If you’re distracted by your phone, you’re an easy target for a criminal. Keep your head up and stay focused on your surroundings when you’re out. If you see something suspicious, get out of the area as quickly as you can. Lock your car doors as soon as you get in.
The goal is to make it more difficult for a criminal to make you their target. If they feel like robbing you will cause more trouble than it’s worth, they’ll move on. Make plans and strategize so you stay safe.
