The NRA website has a whole section dedicated to sharing stories the mainstream media would never touch. It’s called “The Armed Citizen” and we have covered it before, but today we’ll be sharing the remarkable story of Raul Mendez. This man is a hero who saved his whole family, but you have probably never heard of him.
On July 3, 2022, Raul Mendez and his family were celebrating Independence Day at a friend’s house when disaster struck. He explains, “A neighbor we had never met came in uninvited and started shooting at all of us right out of the blue. Next thing you know, the shooter shot me right in the side of the head and through my left eye.” Everyone thought Raul was dead, but “by God’s grace” he woke up. He realized the shooter was still in the house with the gun pointed at his wife, two daughters, and other friends.
Thankfully, Raul carried a concealed pistol and was able to use it to stop the shooter. He fired four times into the shooter’s chest, killing him, and saving everyone. “If I didn’t have my gun, everyone in the house would have died.” Raul is a law-abiding citizen, but because he is a hero who supports the Second Amendment, no one in the news covered his story. He points out that if he hadn’t been carrying a concealed weapon and everyone was killed, the media would have been all over this story.
Every year, more than a million law abiding citizens in America use their firearms to protect themselves and others. But in 2021, America’s five largest newspapers only published 10 stories about defensive firearm use. It is important we share these stories because they give credence to the fact that criminals will always break the law, so we have to protect ourselves.
This has obviously changed Raul and his family’s lives. He was in the hospital for five days and lost his left eye. This event has reinforced his support for the Second Amendment and as soon as he was released from the hospital, he bought his family two handguns to start training with. “Evil will always exist and we are more ready to confront it with equal force now more than ever.”
