The NRA website does a great job of keeping us updated on any movement regarding our Second Amendment rights. Recently, there have been significant moves made by the Biden administration and the U.S. House pertaining to stricter gun laws.
“The first bill, H.R. 7910, is a gun control package that was introduced only last week and rushed to the U.S. House floor by Nancy Pelosi.” This bill would ban 18-20 year old law-abiding adults from owning semi-automatic rifles and shotguns. It doesn’t make much sense to take away this right when they are trusted to vote in elections and serve our country at these ages. This bill also aims to “ban standard-capacity magazines that are overwhelmingly popular with law-abiding Americans for self-defense, as well as redirect federal tax dollars intended for law enforcement and other public safety programs to “buyback” existing lawfully-possessed magazines.” It would also prohibit building your own firearm, an American tradition that has been protected by law since the founding of our country.
Furthermore, the bill would “redefine the term “frame or receiver” in a way that effectively turns tens of millions of lawfully-owned firearms into contraband.” It also attempts to control how Americans store firearms in their own homes. As you can see, this is the beginning of a dangerous path.
The second bill is H.R. 2377, and it aims to “create “red flag orders” that allow for the confiscation of firearms without due process of law.” This gives judges the ability to confiscate firearms on a case by case basis, without giving the individual a fair appeal.
What can we, as law-abiding citizens, do when we feel like our rights are being slowly taken away? First, try to stay informed so you can share what you know with those around you. We know gun control laws are coming out under the guise of trying to stop criminals. Since criminals are not going to follow the law, the only people who are going to be affected are law-abiding citizens, which is why these gun control laws are really only stripping us of our rights.
