November 3, 2020 is Election Day and America has a very important decision to make. Will President Trump stay our president, or will Joe Biden take his place? With so much controversy and conflicting information swirling around us, it’s important to search for reputable sources when researching these candidate’s platforms. The NRA is a great source for discovering where these men stand on our Second Amendment rights.
Back in 2016, the NRA endorsed Donald Trump as their presidential candidate and he even spoke at that year’s convention. This year, a letter was sent to President Trump from the NRA stating, “On behalf of America’s 5 million NRA members, the National Rifle Association Political Victory Fund (NRA-PVF) is proud to endorse your reelection as president of the United States of America. You have done more than any president to protect the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. The NRA stands behind you and your administration. We were proud to play a leading role in your 2016 election. You promised to defend the Second Amendment and stand tall for the constitutional freedoms in which our members believe. You recognize the Second Amendment is about liberties that belong to all Americans. You have delivered on your promise in extraordinary ways.”
So what does the President’s opponent have to say about our right to bear arms? In a recent NRA-ILA article, they explain Biden, “does not consider the Second Amendment to protect an individual right to keep and bear arms. During a September 2019 “townhall” event, Biden was asked, “Do you agree with the D.C. v. Heller decision in regards to protecting the individual right to bear arms that are in common use and which are utilized for lawful purposes?” Biden responded in part, “If I were on the court I wouldn’t have made the same ruling.”
It is speculated that if Senate Republicans confirm justice Barret to the supreme court before the election and then Joe Biden is elected president, he plans to pack the court. The NRA article explains if this scenario plays out, it “would involve installing a solid anti-Second Amendment majority to the U.S. Supreme Court that would work to eliminate recognition of the individual right to keep and bear arms.”
In another NRA-ILA article, Biden’s gun control plans are explored further. On his own website, Biden has laid out a plan called the “BIDEN PLAN TO END OUR GUN VIOLENCE EPIDEMIC”. The goal of this plan is to ban all online sales of firearms, ammunition, kits, and gun parts. The result of this would harm the sales of businesses that sell these items since they won’t be able to utilize the use of online sales.
The best way to prevent our freedoms from being taken away is to vote in the upcoming election. The NRA says it best when they explain what we can do. “NRA members and gun rights activists must work to inform their family, friends, neighbors, and other freedom-minded individuals about the dangers a Biden presidency poses to the U.S. Supreme Court and the Second Amendment.”
